Brought from China to Japan in 1125, the philosophy behind Zen Yoga is to get the five major organs – liver, lungs, heart, spleen and kidney – working in harmony with each other to ward off ill health. If one organ is over nourished, it will become too strong and oppress the others, causing imbalance.
With its focus on mindfulness and breath, this type of yoga is especially suitable for city dwellers, who have too much outside mental stimuli overstimulating their system and creating unbalance in their bodies. Zen yoga helps to ground them.
HOW IT WORKS
The practice is a series of tailor made movements and breaths aimed at unblocking stagnant energy in the body’s 12 energy lines, the meridians. It allows energy to flow freely and bring the organs into balance.
Zen Yoga particularly works on strengthening the central energy point, the tanden, which helps us deal with the ups and downs of life and recharge our batteries. It also balances the yin and yang in the body to keep it in perfect harmony.
