This is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine, where it is used to treat maladies as diverse as respiratory conditions, arthritis, gastrointestinal disorders, depression and sports injuries.
Glass cups are warmed using a cotton ball soaked in alcohol and then placed in a cup. This removes all the oxygen and creates a vacuum.
The cup is turned upside down and placed over a specific area and the vacuum created by the lack of oxygen anchors the cup to the skin and pulls it upwards inside the glass. Cups stay in place from five to 20 minutes and may be moved around over meridians and acupressure points.
This is believed to open the pores, stimulate the flow of blood, draws out toxins and balances and realigns the flow of Qi, or energy.
This warming treatment is not suitable for people who suffer from high fever or convulsions, who have thin skin or bleed easily.
